
Joseph S. Gondusky, MD, FAAOS

Dr. Joseph Gondusky is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacements. He has extensive training in anterior approach total hip replacement, partial and total knee replacement, minimally-invasive surgery, computer-assisted surgery, and complex revision joint replacement.
Dr. Gondusky joined the Jordan-Young Institute in 2015 after finishing a career in the Navy as a Commander. He has become one of the region’s busiest hip and knee replacement surgeons, performing approximately 700 joint replacements annually. He credits his extensive training and dedication to patient care as the factors that have distinguished him as a respected surgeon in the community. His care and outcomes have led to multiple awards and outstanding patient reviews.
Dr. Gondusky’s Education, Training, and Research
Dr. Gondusky attended Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA, on an academic scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society distinction. Following graduation, he completed an internship in general surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He served two years with the US Marines out of Camp Pendleton, CA, deploying as Battalion Surgeon with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to Iraq in 2004. During his naval career, he also completed four years of orthopedic surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego; served three years as a staff orthopedic surgeon at the Navy’s busiest overseas hospital in Okinawa, Japan; and completed fellowship training at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, CA. This training focused on hip and knee replacement subspecialty expertise. After fellowship, he joined the orthopedic residency program at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. He has performed high volume hip and knee replacement surgeries since 2013.


In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Gondusky is a passionate administrative leader, researcher, and educator. He is the director of outpatient joint replacement care at his facilities. He regularly teaches trainees and surgeons joint replacement topics and surgical techniques. He has designed knee replacement components and hip replacement technology with international expert teams. His research has been presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meetings, and published in the Journal of Arthroplasty. He also serves as an assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University (USU) and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS).
He lives with his wife and two children in Virginia Beach, where he enjoys spending time with family and doing outdoor activities.

Dr. Gondusky has a team to help streamline your care. This consists of his secretary, medical assistants, scribes, surgical assists and physicians assistants. Meet Jessica Tanner PA-C, she assists Dr. Gondusky in both the operating room and the office. She serves as a resource for patients before and after surgery. Jessica is readily available to respond to patient questions and concerns regarding their course of treatment.
